“The first wealth is health” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. I remember my father telling me the same thing when I was younger, that health is wealth. That of course meant nothing to me at the time, as focusing on my health wasn’t a priority for me. It wasn’t until I turned 40, and decided to quit smoking cigarettes, that I began to focus on my health and well being. I guess that’s when my wellness journey began. It was 2010 and I took my last cigarette drag before the new year. Ten years later and I am still nicotine free. It wasn’t easy to quit cold turkey. It took many tries, many relapses, many excuses and finally a decisive moment to quit. I just decided that 2010 was the year of major change. Wellness to me is not just physical but everything- including, mental, emotional and spiritual. It’s when you actively engage in the process of growth, being uncomfortable with changes and eventually finding your flow in life. I did some planning on how to execute and stick to my goal of being nicotine free and get on the health and wellness wagon. I decided that I would start with my mind. I began practicing mindfulness meditation and gratitude. Everything else was a daily work in progress. It helps when I wake up in the morning and not just get up and go on my day without being mindful. I take my time to set up and visualize how my day will be, always believing that it’s going to be a great day filled with opportunities and abundance.
Now 2020 and I’m surviving this pandemic. I still have my rituals that I do. I have changed so much and I feel stronger and healthier than I’ve ever been. I definitely feel like I’m in the zone, where I am healthy, have found inner peace and a joyful heart.
