FAQ

Why choose to go to a Licensed Massage Therapist?

A Licensed Massage Therapist is a professional who has studied and has gone though strict and extensive training from an accredited college and has knowledge in Anatomy and Kinesiology, Myology, Neurology, Pathology and other medical/ health related subjects. Their training allows them to create an individualized treatment plan based on your goals and needs. An LMT has met certain standards and requirements as mandated by the state and must pass a state board exam in order to practice and engage in the profession.

I've never had a massage before. What should I do to prepare and what happens during and after the session?

*It is recommended that you not eat  1 hour before your session. It's also a good idea to stay hydrated.

*Please come in showered and clean.

*If it's your first time to Restorative Massage NY, please fill out a short intake form and let your therapist know of any medical/ health or allergy concerns.

* In the session room, you will be asked to disrobe up to the level of your comfort. Be assured that you will be completely draped  to keep you warm and comfortable and only the area that's being worked on will be undraped. Your privacy and modesty will be preserved throughout the session.

*During the session, you may go into a dream like zone. It is encouraged that you give feedback about the pressure. Should you feel pain or discomfort when a particular area is being worked on, please feel free to say something. Your feedback is valued.

*After the session, it is important that you take your time getting up and off the table. The therapist will leave the room so you can get dressed and will be waiting for you outside the treatment room.

Is it safe to get a massage during 1st trimester- before 13th weeks?

Yes, massage is fine and safe to receive in all trimesters. Be sure to work with a Licensed Massage Therapist and preferably certified in prenatal bodywork.

Do you work with high risk pregnancy?

Yes, we specialize in working with high risk pregancy offering tailored, safe techniques, adaptive positioning, and  expert knowledge of clinical contraindications. We provide a safe, collaborative experience that puts your health and comfort first.

How soon can I get a massage after delivery?

You can get a massage as soon as you feel comfortable assuming there were no issues during and after the (vaginal) delivery. For C- sections, it is the general recommedation to wait 4-8 weeks for the incision to properly heal.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage painful?

No, MLD is not supposed to be painful at all. There are other "MLD" techniques other than the Vodder method which we are certified in. The other methods uses a more vigorous and deeper pressure. If you study the structure and location of these capillaries, MLD is moving the fluid via the capillaries which are just below the surface of your skin. If you apply too much pressure on the skin, these delicate capillaries carrying fluid will collapse and break down and not collect any fluid. This is why light and gentle skin stretch/strokes is used to encourage fluid to be collected by these miniscule capillaries to promote true drainage of the tissues.
