Prenatal Massage

I specialize in women’s health and wellness, with a particular focus on prenatal and postpartum recovery. Prenatal massage has evolved from a luxury to an essential part of many expectant mothers’ care routines. Its benefits are vast, including:

  • Pain Relief: As pregnancy progresses, massage can help alleviate common aches, especially in the lower back, legs, hips, and feet.

  • Reduced Swelling and Improved Circulation: Massage helps reduce swelling and promotes better blood flow.

  • Stress Relief, Mood Enhancement, and Better Sleep: These are essential for both mother and baby.

There’s a common misconception that prenatal massage should only be available after the first trimester, but that’s not the case. Prenatal massage does not cause miscarriage. However, it is crucial that the therapist is licensed and trained in prenatal massage techniques. As long as there are no contraindications—like uncontrolled hypertension, acute infection, or clotting disorders—massage is safe in any trimester.

For optimal safety, side-lying on the left side is the best position, allowing for better fetal oxygenation. Pressure can be applied during massage, but avoid deep tissue work on the legs, as this can increase the risk of dislodging a blood clot. While foot massage can be relaxing, avoid strong pressure on specific areas of the lower legs and feet.

A woman can benefit from massage right up to labor. Near the end of pregnancy, massage can reduce anxiety and stress, improve circulation, and support better labor outcomes, helping prepare the body for the demands of labor and delivery.
